TAG TEAM SURFING
GAME RULES
Surf teams must adhere to the Game Rules. Failure to comply could result in disqualification or loss of competition points.

BASIC RULES
1. Team versus team per match.
2. Five surfers per team + reserve optional
3. One quota waves per surfer
4. One quota waves per team
5.1 Match time decided on surf conditions
5.2 Rules 3, 4, and 5 are flexible, depending on surfing conditions.
6.1 Wave count changes will require an equal quota of waves for each surfer.
6.2 No match time adjustments once match has begun.
7. Every wave counts.
8.1 One judge per match – extra judges per match optional, maximum seven (7).
8.2 Where two judges per match, scores are averaged.
Three or Five judges per match highest and lowest scores are cancelled. Remaining judge/judges scores are averaged.
8.3 Judging point scale:
0 - 1 point = below average
2,3,4 points = average
5,6,7 points = good
8 - 9 points = excellent
10 points = supreme
8.3 Judging Criteria:
Surfer who executes the most radical, skillful, and tactical manoeuvres in the most critical sections of the biggest and/or best waves with the most speed and flow for the longest functional distance per wave.
9. Highest points at match end, or on reaching team’s wave quota, wins the match.
10.1 Ties in matches:
Coach/Manager or Captain to choose one surfer and a reserve from their respective teams; two waves per surfer, time of Surf Off decided by match referee/referees, dependent on surfing conditions. Highest total score wins.
10.2 If scores remain tied:
Coach/manager or captain to choose one surfer and a reserve from their respective teams; one wave per surfer, time of Surf Off decided by match referee/referees, dependent on surfing conditions. Highest total score wins.
10.3 If scores are still tied:
Count back of best wave from each surfer’s quota added together; highest score wins. Still tied, best two (2) waves. Still tied, best three (3) waves. Scores are still locked, best double whammy wins.
FLAGS AND TAGS
11. Hooter to start and end matches.
11.1 Green flag to start. (Signal)
12.1 Yellow flag represents yellow dugout.
12.2 Blue flag represents blue dugout.
13.1 Red flag to finish. (Signal)
13. 2 Red flag to stop clock. (Signal) e.g. Disputes.
14.1 White flag to signal clean tag between individual team surfers. (Signal)
14.2 Black and White flag checker to signal reserve.
15.1 Black flag to signal surfer to sin bin.
15.2 Black flag and competing team singlet or shirt-coloured flag, waved together to signal offending team and surfer to penalty box.
15.3 When a surfer challenges an opponent’s right to a direction of the wave, e.g. left to right, the surfer with right of wave will be signaled – the surfer’s team flag will be waved by the beach referee.
16. Surfer cannot enter water until tag or flag signal has been made.
17. Tag must be made by contact of hands between surfers.
18. Tag can only be made with next competing surfer of tagging team in launching pad, surfboard only required by next competing surfer.
REFEREE AND PENALTIES
19.1 One beach referee per match.
19.2 Surf referee an option.
20. Beach referee to control matches.
21. Beach referee to decide on interference and penalties.
22.1 First to feet has right of wave, unless surfers decide to go in opposite directions – one left, one right. In case of collision, first surfer to feet has the right of wave.
22.2 Beach referee will decide on interfering surfer.
22.3 Penalty of time in penalty box.
22.4 Surf Referee will assist Beach Referee on Interference Penalties.
INTERFERENCE PENALTIES
23.1 Physical aggression towards opposing surfer.
23.2 Catching extra waves and standing after the surfer’s quota.
23.3 Paddling interference – willful interference.
23.4 Breaking early from launching pads.
23.5 Any way stopping opposition from scoring points.
23.6 Any coach/manager, captain, surfer, or officials of clubs or teams intruding during match time, on the roped-off area for referees and judges, i.e. forbidden territory. The offending team will be penalised time in the penalty box.
24.1 Referee will enforce all rule breaks.
24.2 All rule breaks are time in the penalty box.
24.3 The offending surfer will immediately return to beach and enter the penalty box.
24.4 All penalty time will start when surfer first steps into the penalty box.
24.5 Penalty time is decided by match referee/s, depending on surf conditions and total wave game count.
25. A team, having reached its quota of waves before the end of match time, will be disqualified if it interferes with an opposing team.
GENERAL RULES
26.1 Matches to start from launching pads.
26.2 When surf conditions prevent beach launching pads, water launching pads will be set up at a reasonable distance from the take-off.
26.3 Tag by hands is a requirement for team surfing.
27.1 A coin toss decides first wave priority, i.e. team winning toss chooses first wave, or wave priority, and also chooses the launch pad. The team losing the toss may still take off on the first wave but must not interfere in the selection and riding of that wave by the team who won the toss.
27.2 First wave priority is forfeited if the surfer makes a failed attempt for that wave.
27.3 Referee to decide on loss of first wave choice.
27.4 Winner of the toss flies their team flag to signal being awarded first wave choice. After the first wave option is exercised, the flag is to be lowered.
28. After the first wave option is exercised, the surfer first to their feet has right of wave.
29. To be declared a scoring wave, the surfer must stand up or the soles of their feet make contact with deck on board.
30. When returning to the beach on a wave to make a tag in launching pad after reaching his/her quota of waves, the surfer must lay down on surfboard.
FEATURES
31. After catching the final wave of quota, surfers must return to shore to make a tag in the launching pad for the next surfer to enter the water.
32.1 On completing the final scoring waves of the team wave quota within match time, surfers can score 2 points by returning to the launch pad.
32.2 No points are awarded if surfer is not in the launch pad by end of match time.
33.1 Where a surfer is interfered with but still makes the wave, she/he can raise an arm to indicate to Referee and Judge that the wave is to be counted in the team's wave quota. No extra wave is granted.
33.2 When a surfer who is interfered with wants an extra wave, the signal is not necessary; Referee will call No Score and extra wave is granted.
33.3 Interfering surfer’s wave is not scored.
34. Referee/s can only stop the clock to settle disputes.
35. Referee/s decides on match time before the match begins.
36. No automatic starts for next match.
37. Each team must have a Coach/Manager or Captain.
38.1 Before the start of match, five surfers and one reserve are nominated by the Coach/Manager or Captain, who can then choose the order of surfers while the match is in progress.
38.2 Reserve is on standby in case of injury, surfboard breakage, or substitution. A surfer can be replaced by Coach/Manager or Captain, who signal the substitution by waving a black and white checked flag as well as their team flag. After a tag in the launch pad, the Reserve picks up where the replaced surfer finished. For example, from a quota of 4 waves, where 2 were surfed, Reserve then surfs the final 2 waves.
38.3 Where a Reserve is called through surfboard breakage or injury to a surfer, tag of hands is allowed where the incident occurred, be it in the water, or on shore. However, the replacement process, signaled by waving a black and white checked flag, begins with the Reserve surfer at the launching pad.
39.1 Coach/Manager or Captain can nominate one team member to gain double points. That surfer can call double points by raising both arms straight up after completing any one of her/his wave quota.
39.2 Double points (Double Whammy) may be called from the moment the surfer completes their wave to the start of the next ride, or from the last wave till the next tag or elapse of the match time.
39.3 Referee will acknowledge Double Whammy call and Judge will score double points.
40. Commentator will call match.
41. Progressive scores read to the public by Commentator or Referee after each team has completed 1 quota, 2 quota, etc, through to the full team quota of waves.
42. Punctual preparedness for the match is the responsibility of competitors and their Coaches.
43.1 Teams must be registered before the start of the first match.
43.2 Six surfers sign on – 1 to 6 only.
43.3 Surfers to keep sign-on numbers for whole match.
44.1 Premiership Referee to rule over the entire premiereship and final series.
44.2 Match referee has final match decisions.
44.3 Premiereship Referee has final decision on protests.
44.4 Protests can be made within 60 seconds after match end, to match Referee. A written protest is then to be presented within 3 days to the Premiership Referee.
45. A team will be penalised up to $1000 if found guilty of unacceptable language or behaviour during match time or during the premiership and finals. The penalty also applies to public criticism of Referees or Judges, or competition staff.
DEFINITIONS
Coach/Manager: co-ordinates a team’s proceedings during the matches.
Commentator: Person who reads out match statistics and announces the action in the water and on the land to the public.
Dugout: Surfers’ meeting and training area.
Forbidden Territory: Roped-off section of the beach for Referee and Judges. Permission from the authorities is needed to enter Forbidden Territory.
Judge: Person who records the score at completion of a surfer's ride.
Launching Pad: Roped-off section of the beach where surfers must wait for the all
important tag between team mates before entering the surf. Surfers must also begin matches from launch pads.
Manoeuvres: A surfer's tactical and skillful movements of a surfboard on a single wave.
Premiership Referee: Oversees the entire premiership and handles all protests.
Referee: Rules over the game and keeps the game to the rules.
Penalty Box: Roped-off section of the beach for allocated penalty time when a surfer breaks competition rules. Penalty Box time starts when surfer enters the Penalty Box, leaving the opposing team in control of the match.

In applying to compete in Tag Team Surfing Titles, I acknowledge that there are inherent dangers associated with the sport of tag team surfing and that serious accidents can and do happen which may result in me being injured due to my participation in the Tag Team Surfing Titles.
I confirm that I am suffering no illness or health issues that may put me or my fellow competitors at risk due to my participation at the Tag Team Surfing Titles.
To the extent permitted by law, I agree to absolve and indemnify the Carter Surfing Industry and its sponsors, respective councils, its directors, officers and employees, from and against any and all liability for injury, loss or damage however caused through my participation in the Tag Team Surfing Titles.
I agree to release and forever discharge the Carter Surfing Industry and its associated sponsors, respective councils, its directors, officers and employees, from all claims that l may have had or may have had but for this release arising from my participation in the Tag Team Surfing Titles.
I agree that the Carter Surfing Industry retain the right to utilise images of my participation in the Tag Team Surfing Titles for the purposes of promoting Tag Team Surfing and Carter Surfing Industry.
I have read, understood, acknowledged, and agree to the above declaration including the warning, release and indemnity. I affirm that l have not altered the official competition registration form in any way. The Tag Team Surfing organisers reserve the right to change/cancel events, times and duration of match times and rules due to surf conditions.
